Umbrella Insurance is an extremely important (yet often overlooked) coverage that protects your assets and financial future from risks that can exceed your primary insurance coverage limits. Due to ever rising medical care costs and the increasingly litigious nature of our society, having additional coverage is imperative.
For example, your primary auto insurance policy (like all insurances) has a limit for medical liabilities – what were to happen if you are in a terrible accident and the other party is gravely injured? How quickly could their medical care surpass $100,000-$300,000? How much more so if more than one person is injured?
Other risks that would warrant purchasing an Umbrella Insurance policy are trampoline owners, owners of certain breeds of dogs, gunowners, homeowners with swimming pools and so on.

An umbrella policy kicks in when you reach the limit on the underlying liability coverage in an auto, homeowners, renters or co-op / condo policy. It will also cover you for additional types of claims, such as libel and slander.
Because the personal umbrella policy pays out after the underlying coverage is exhausted, most insurers will want you to have about $250,000 of liability insurance on your auto policy and $300,000 of liability insurance on your homeowners policy before they will sell you an umbrella policy.
While your standard auto and homeowners policies do provide some level of coverage for liability, it is typically more cost effective to purchase an Umbrella Insurance policy instead of choosing the highest possible liability limits on your primary policies.
Naturally there are some cases with more potential risk than others but anyone who wants to protect their assets and/or financial future could benefit from this type of coverage. If you are sued, this kind of policy will pay up to your policy limits for legal judgments against you, as well as the related attorney's fees.
