Medicare Part D

Medicare Drug Plan (Part D)

Why is it Important?

Medicare Part D (sometimes referred to as Medicare Drug Plan) is an important part of your Medicare coverage line-up. Generally Medicare does not cover prescription medications unless you enroll into a Medicare Part D plan.

Private insurance companies approved by Medicare offer these plans. Monthly plan cost (premiums) and drug costs vary by company – some even offer different pricing when using one of the insurance company’s preferred pharmacies. Every plan has its own drug formulary which is the list of covered medications; this list sets the price for each drug.

There are two ways to receive Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D). You could choose (1) a standalone Part D plan sometimes referred to as PDP (Prescription Drug Plan) or (2) a Medicare Advantage plan that includes Part D coverage.

We Are Ready When You Are

In order to qualify for a Medicare Part D plan, you must:

  1. Have Medicare Part A and/or Part B
  2. Live in the plan's service area.

Plan premiums (monthly plan cost) and coverage vary greatly so it is important to consult with your Smart Insurance Solutions® agent in order to find a plan that will best meet your needs.

Plans may change year to year so we conduct an annual plan review for our clients each annual enrollment period which is October 15th through December 7th.

Enrollment in a Medicare Part D plan is not required but you may incur a late enrollment penalty (LEP) if you do not enroll when you are first eligible. The penalty accumulates each month you do not have creditable drug coverage and does not stop accumulating until you enroll. The penalty is then added onto your drug plan cost every month for the rest of your life (certain exceptions may apply).

There is a federal program designed to help lower Medicare Part D costs called Low Income Subsidy (LIS) or Extra Help.

The Extra Help program can substantially cut costs and you may qualify even if you don't qualify for Medicaid. One of our team members can help you apply to see if you'll qualify. Remember there is never a fee for our services!
